Beccles Lions present their second community defibrillator to the town of Beccles
Beccles and District Lions Club have achieved their goal in providing the Town of Beccles with its second Public Accessible Community Defibrillator. The defibrillator was officially presented to the Mayor of Beccles, Councillor Graham Catchpole by Beccles Lions Club President, Lion Fred Helsdon.
The defibrillator is situated on the outside wall at the entrance of the Beccles Station Café building, which is part of the newly refurbished Beccles Railway Station Development.
Lion President Fred said “Because of the tremendous support we received for the first defibrillator in the centre of the town at the Citizens Advice Bureau. We felt that we should aim to get another defibrillator for the town in another location where the public will be. Hence we set about fund raising again specifically for this to happen and a year on we are delighted to present our second defibrillator to Beccles Town. Of course none of this would have been possible without the tremendous support of other local charities’, the owner of the station building, Jaqueline Crisp and the people of Beccles for all their generous giving. Plus a special thank you must go to the Café owner Cathy Auckland, who have agreed to monitor the defibrillator by submitting all the necessary weekly, monthly and yearly reports to keep it fully operational.”
Upon receiving the new defibrillator Beccles Mayor, Councillor Graham Catchpole said “I’m delighted to see the community spirit of individuals and businesses coming together yet again to enable the Beccles Lions Club to provide this second defibrillator to the town of Beccles. I believe this now means Beccles has a total of 6 defibrillators around the town, which are available to use should they be needed for an emergency. We must always remember what a life saver a defibrillator can be in an emergency should anyone have a Cardiac Arrest while in the town. Everyone involved deserves a very big thank you.”
Lion Dermot Wesley-Smith, the club’s welfare chairman, added “As previously we have been working closely with The Community Heartbeat Trust who supplied the first defibrillator. Their advice and guidance has again been invaluable to us and on Saturday 18th March at the Beccles Station Cafe they will be providing a Free Community Defibrillator Seminar from 11.00am until 1.00pm. They will be demonstrating the use of defibrillators and how the equipment works. Plus its benefits to the community in saving precious minutes in the treatment of sudden Cardiac Arrest. Please do come along because the more people that know how to use the portable defibrillator installed in our community, the more chance there is of saving the life of a victim of a sudden Cardiac Arrest. Everybody is welcome and no special skills are required, just your willingness to play an important role in the event of a medical emergency.”
