The second annual Ivan Holmes Community Award was presented to Douglas Peck by Mandy Holmes at the Beccles and District Lions Club Charter Dinner.
Douglas Peck has been a stalwart of the town. His involvement has been immense over the years with such events as Variety Shows, Beccles Carnival, Duck Races, Dog Shows Christmas Lights, and who can forget the famous Teddy Bears Picnic. Almost any activity that has taken place in Beccles Douglas would have been a part of it. He has also been an active campaigner for the retention of our local cinema and provided public address facilities for town events for many, many years. Plus personally maintaining the war memorial and preparing it every year prior to Remembrance Sunday. The list goes on. A true worker, volunteer and fund raiser for the local community.
In recognition of all the sterling work he has undertaken over the years, and his fantastic achievements within the community, he received the 2017 Ivan Holmes Community Award and Certificate. In addition to this Beccles Lions also presented a cheque to Douglas for £250 for his nominated charity – which was The May Centre, Beccles.
Lion President Fred Helsdon said “This annual award is in memory of the late Lion Ivan Holmes MJF, who was a member of Beccles and District Lions Club for over 35 years and the majority of that time he was the club’s secretary. Throughout that time Ivan was also an ever present figure within the Beccles Community, and, through this award Beccles Lions Club wanted to recognise those people who, like Douglas tirelessly serve their community helping to improve the lives of others.
Before presenting the award to Douglas, Mandy said “The intention of this award is to act as an inspirational and motivational legacy, to continue Ivan’s good work. I know the club received lots of nominations, and one nominee stood out amongst them all, and that was Douglas. I know Ivan and Douglas had been involved with many projects in Beccles over the years and I do feel the local Community benefited from it. I would also like to acknowledge and thank every other nominee for their work within the local area, which of course is all voluntary. So to all the volunteers, whether clubs, societies or individuals, that help to improve our community – thank you.”
In response Douglas said “Mandy, I would like to thank, Beccles Lions Club for this lovely award. It is completely unexpected. Ivan and myself have been involved with many projects over the years and I can say I have not known a better Lion serving his local community. I feel very honoured and moved by this award, because Ivan was such a presence within the community and to even be considered for the award is an honour let alone, receive it. It’s very encouraging to see so many people doing so much for the community, long may it continue. I will treasure this award, thank you.”
